Occupational Therapy (OT) is the ART and SCIENCE of enabling individuals to participate in their personal meaningful activities or ‘occupations’ by using evidence-based practice and clinical reasoning.

OT’s assist people of all ages to perform functional tasks that occupy their daily lives.   OT’s help children develop a range of life skills that are necessary to become confident, functional and independent adults.  These ‘occupations’ may include:

  • Playing on the playground

  • Attending school

  • Riding a bike

  •  Participating in social groups

  • Tying their shoe laces

OT’s work on developing your child’s skills, including:

  • Appropriate regulation and arousal levels regarding task performances

  • Age appropriate milestones in gross and fine motor skills

  • Play and social skill

  • Sensory discrimination and processing

  • Age appropriate self care skills

  • A positive self-concept

OT’s have a university master’s degree and general educational background of an occupational therapist includes extensive course work in anatomy, neurology, and psychology as well as activity analysis, which enables the therapist to analyze the components of play and identify tasks that will improve the child’s skills.

OT’s working in pediatric private practice typically have years of relevant experience working with children as well as regular additional training courses to supplement education and experience to better support children and their families.
